3-D Printers on the "High Seas"

The Navy is adopting the use of additive manufacturing as a logistics solution for when on the high seas.  In their recent “Print the Fleet” workshop held as part of the Maker Faire, a two-day event recently held at Combat Direction Systems Activity, Dam Neck, one of the Navy’s warfare centers, Navy sailors and stakeholders were invited to take part and learn about additive manufacturing techniques and processes.

The Navy put a 3D printer on the USS Essex to experiment with the concept earlier this year. The printer has been used to print disposable medical supplies, small caps for an oil tank, and model planes.
