Nuclear Fusion Power: Energy Department Successfully Tests Technology

Dec. 13, 2022
Commercialization may be decades away, but the promise of clean, plentiful energy has been a target for researchers since the 1950s.

Using massive lasers and decades of scientific expertise, U.S. Department of Energy researchers produced a stable fusion reaction on Dec. 5, bringing the promise of clean, plentiful energy if technical challenges can be solved.

The technology is far from commercial availability, and years if not decades of research will be needed to further develop systems. But, the long-sought-after technology could be a massive scientific breakthrough.
