3M to Expand R&D in India

Move aimed at helping company in its goal to develop products for local markets.

3M India Ltd. announced Friday it would establish a new research-and-development facility in Bangalore.

"Building this new innovation lab is part of our growth strategy for India," said Inge Thulin, executive vice president, 3M's international operations. "Our intention is to accelerate development of products 'in India for India' through a local, cutting-edge R&D capability and to provide growth and developmental opportunities for local talent."

Jay Ihlenfeld, senior vice president of 3M Asia Pacific added that the new lab would draw on 3M's global R&D network, which numbers 35 around the world. The R&D lab is expected be completed by the fourth quarter of 2010.

3M India's manufacturing plants are in Bangalore, Pune and Ahmedabad.
