OSHA Cites Georgia Manufacturer After Follow-up Inspection

March 22, 2011
Nineteen health and safety violations carry fines of $95,240.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration has cited Carolina Skiff for 19 safety and health violations. The citations were issued after OSHA visited the Waycross, Ga., fiberglass boat manufacturer to conduct a follow-up inspection to evaluate progress on abating previously identified violations.

The citations carry fines of $95,240.

OSHA issued Carolina Skiff six repeat citations, four of which were safety-related. Among the alleged violations, the agency reported the manufacturer used compressed air and unapproved electrical equipment in areas where high dust concentrations could lead to a fire or deflagration hazard; failed to clean up dust accumulations; and lacked exit signage, resulting in emergency escape hazards.

Two health-related repeat citations were issued for allegedly failing to train welders regarding hexavalent chromium hazards and failing to implement engineering controls to reduce high noise levels.

OSHA also issued 10 serious citations for alleged violations that include exposing workers to fall hazards, an improperly installed electrical service system, and improperly storing and transferring flammable liquids used in spray-painting operations.

Three other-than-serious citations also were issued.

The company has 15 business days from receipt of the citations and proposed penalties to comply, request an informal conference with OSHA's area director or contest the findings.
