NLRB Issues July 1 Deadline to Speak on Measures to Streamline Union Elections

June 27, 2011
Written comments accepted until Aug. 22

Do you want to weigh in publicly on the National Labor Relations Boards proposed rule to streamline union election campaigns?

The federal agency will hold an open meeting July 18 at its Washington headquarters to receive public comments, but parties interested in attending must let the NLRB know by 4 p.m. July 1.

If enough interest exists, the meeting could expand to July 19.

The NLRBs proposed rule reforms were made public June 21 and "are designed to fix flaws in the board's current procedures that build in unnecessary delays," the agency stated.

The 12 proposed reforms include expanded use of electronic communications for document filing and the elimination of pre-election reviews of regional director rulings, which the agency says are rarely requested but create routine delays.

Critics of the proposed reforms contend they are being sought to speed up union representation elections to the benefit of labor and at the expense of employers.

Parties interested in attending can send an email to [email protected]. The subject line should say: REQUEST TO ATTEND PUBLIC MEETING REGARDING RIN 3142-AA08. A written request also is permitted. The message should include the full name, organizational affiliation if any, and names of any people or organizations on whose behalf the attendee is appearing. Include a brief outline of any presentation the attendee wishes to make.

The NLRB said it will present a tentative schedule for all presentations before the July 18 meeting.

The agency also will accept written comments on the proposed amendments until Aug. 22.
