Chrysler to Offer Training, Job Placement for Outgoing Workers

Sept. 15, 2008
Automaker partners with the UAW and state to provide assistance.

Chrysler LLC introduced three programs on Sept. 12 that will provide financial help, job training and placement assistance for UAW-represented employees who retire or accept buyout offers.

Chrysler will offer an Incentive Program for Retirement, Special Early Retirement and Enhanced Voluntary Termination of Employment to 13,800 workers, which represents nearly all hourly employees in the state.

The State of Michigan is working with Chrysler to provide training through its No Worker Left Behind program, which helps retired or displaced employees pursue associate's degrees or technical training. The state will offer skill and aptitude assessments, career counseling, crisis intervention and life skills counseling, up to two years of training, and support services such as mentoring and coaching.

Tuition assistance will come in the form of two-year grants of $5,000 per year for each former Chrysler employee. The costs cover instructional fees, books, materials, fees and academic support services.

Job placement assistance will be provided through the Michigan Works program, which connects participants with training providers and employees.

Chrysler will also provide special relocation and mortgage services for former employees who are interested in refinancing their home or moving to another location.
