A Malaysia Airlines flight that crashed in the Eastern Ukraine Thursday is causing a ripple effect in the skies.
The area near Donetsk, where the Boeing 777 carrying 295 passengers crashed during its flight from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpar, is being largely avoided by major airlines.
FlightRadar24, which globally tracks flights, provides a real-time view of the aircraft being rerouted.
Passengers planes flown by Aeroflot, Air France, Alitalia, British Airways, Lufthansa, Turkish Airlines, Transaero and UTair, among others, all are rerouting planes around the crash site.
Rerouting planes around parts of the Ukraine -- an action already being taken in other parts of the country due to the conflict in Crimea -- can be a costly endeavor for airlines, resulting not only in greater travel times and higher fuel costs, but also in travel delays for passengers.
