Union Meets on Carrier Plant Closing in Indianapolis

Carrier workers in Indianapolis had their first union meeting on Sunday since the company announced it was relocating the plant and its 1,400 jobs to Monterrey, Mexico, the news website of local radio station WIBC 91.3 is reporting

Workers at the HVAC manufacturing plant make on average $34 an hour, while their Mexico counterparts make $6 per hour. 

The head of the United Steelworkers Union has said there is no hope of saving the jobs because of the huge wage difference.

Indianapolis Mayor Joe Hogsett and Democratic Senator Joe Donnelley attended Sunday’s meeting, along with union leadership.

"So today's message was just a message of solidarity,” Hogsett said at the meeting. “That we stand with the 1,400 workers that are potentially going to be affected and that we'll do whatever we can to transition them into new employment if that is the reality.”
