April 12, 2023

Editor's Note: This story originally ran Jan. 24 when Emerson went public with its offer to buy National Instruments. The companies reached an agreement on April 12 for Emerson to buy National for $8.2 billion, a massive premium to the $7 billion figure discussed earlier this year. We also discussed the story in our regular So That Happened feature on March 8, 2023.

After Emerson Electric Co. publicly offered to buy National Instruments Corp. for more than $7 billion, the company has begun acquisition talks.

Emerson is optimistic that these conversations regarding the public proposal will lead to the purchase of NI.

Emerson had previously offered to take over NI in private last May but received “only limited engagement,” according to Emerson executives.

Emerson looks to add a portfolio of test and measurement equipment along with an expanded customer base with the transaction.
